Somalia has a land of 637,540 square kilometers, a coastal line of 3,025 kilometers long, with approximately 8 million people. The natural resources of the country can be divided into marine resources such as fish and salt and surface resources such as forests, wild life, frankincense and myrrh, surface water, subsurface resources like rocks and minerals, fossil fuels and groundwater since the fall of Somalia’s military government in 1991. These natural resources have been vanishing in front of the world eyes due to the lack of legal institutions presence and rather the country has been under famine and severe droughts.
The cutting of trees and the making of charcoal have led to deforestation and desertification and, as a result, made the country more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The lives and livelihoods of Somalia farmers and of the local communities have been seriously affected by the impacts of the climate change. Although, the international well wishers and Somalis living throughout the world have responded to the drought circumstances which has taken thousands of lives in Somalia, The lack of climate sustainable nationwide create poor hygiene, malnutrition and poor health care.
“Somalia leaders are not aware of how to communicate climate change and they can’t help their communities to respond, even they are not present at UN Durban climate talks “said Daud Abdi Daud, SOMESHA Secretary General
“Many Somalis are continuing the struggling of the volatile weather changes in Somalia but they do not connect by the climate change, Kyoto protocol should be alive due to the impacts of climate change are not waiting for governments to get their act together” Mr. Daud added
However, the two-week UN Climate Conference taking place in Durban, South-Africa is at mid-point and its prospect for success is not looking bright. The Conference will become more intense and complex as the political leaders arrive early this week. It is scheduled to end on 9 December.
On the other hand, SOMESHA condemned the horrific killing of two small farmers in madley village of middle shabelle region on December 1, 2011 and the abduction of the other four farmers devoid of reason. It also calls immediate release without condition although no one knows whereabouts.
