Somali journalists and media practitioners faced and have experienced grave human rights abuses through organized crime and corruption in Mogadishu and in across Somalia without independent legal representation in a grassroots level currently. The Somali Media for Environment, Science, Health and Agriculture (SOMESHA) needs to say publicly joint national and international independent probe for the killing and the arrests of Somali journalists is imperative by means of transparent manner.
Somalia independent journalists are feeling fear of reprisal by the Federal Government Security forces as many journalists joined with the government media and NISA right now without officially permitted media legal defense initiative due to article 28 of the draft media law entitled “Preservation of the law” in which indicates that the media related violations will be jointly handled by the ministry of information, national attorney, National Media Council, and the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), and the case can be heard by concerned court of law.
In Somalia media stereotypes is widespread, even though they produce personal attack news features in which are defamatory with a lot of worry. Somali media needs to change their story ideas from the cultural violence coverage to ethical news reporting.
In 2014 alone, apart from the journalists detained or intimidated to be arrest five (4) journalists have been killed, more than 10 wounded while over three media houses closed including the independent shabelle radio station along with its twin radio sky based in Mogadishu. However, SOMESHA is releasing this new report finding at this yearend days of 2014 and it’s clear according to our research that radio kulmiye and many other radio stations including the public radio station (Radio Mogadishu) violated the international labour rights standards and labour laws.
Obviously, Journalists who are working at the moment radio kulmiye are victims of unfair and often abusive treatment. Currently radios reporters in Somalia and independent journalists in general are overworked, unprotected, and are not granted occupational health and safety.
The reason SOMESHA takes this standpoint to produce this report is while after its Secretary General Mr. Daud Abdi Daud opened AK47 bullets at the main gate of the ministry of information on July 27, 2014 and survived a force mental health disorders orchestrated by a hired journalist who works both radio Mogadishu and the national intelligent security service (NISA) in collaboration with the two stakeholders of radio kulmiye based in Mogadishu Mr. Osman Abdullahi Gure who is the director of radio kulmiye and member of the minister of information advisers and Mr. Abdirahman Yusuf Sheikh better known as “Adalla” who works radio Mogadishu and the ministry of information as Mr. Daud always used to live radio kulmiye center due to the security in Mogadishu. Because the extreme insecurity, lack of shelter and access to basic needs increase the risk of developing mental disorders.
All around the world, the psychiatric literature shows that conflict situations increase the prevalence of mental health disorders (Srinivasa Murthy, 2007). In addition to conflict-related head injuries, this difference can be explained by the high levels of stress which can serve as a catalyst for the emergence of psychiatric disorders that otherwise might have remained dormant. Furthermore, violent acts such as targeted killings, amputations, gender-based violence and physical maiming often have long-term psychological effects on those who have experienced or witnessed. Other forms of conflict-related violence can include forced displacement, restricted movement, forced recruitment, harassment and intimidation, and the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance. Widespread insecurity and increased poverty, coupled with a lack of basic services such as healthcare, education, housing, water and sanitation, exacerbate mental problems in war-torn countries.
As the factors of violent acts such as targeted killings, amputations, forced displacement, restricted movement and intimidations are highly contributes to mental or psychological disorders in which later caused socially isolation, SOMESHA members believe that their Secretary General Mr. Daud Abdi Daud is very lucky and well recovered.
On August 20, 2014 Mr. Daud was kidnapped and admitted to Habeb Mental Hospital by radio kulmiye director without any consultation with Mr. Daud’s family and other members of Somali journalists in hidden way illegally and they did grave human rights abuse against Mr. Daud Abdi Daud at that particular night inside the hospital and injected him unknown drugs. Mr. Daud bdi informed after while the deputy minister of information and Mohamed Ibrahim Isack and many other journalists as he was also travelled to Nairobi in order to check his physical health in general.
Habeb mobilized significant resources in terms of awareness raising and community engagement. Habeb public mental health institution has started a public awareness campaign in collaboration with the local broadcasting media including Mr. Daud Abdi Daud who worked very closely habeb mental institution years ago wrote several mental health articles for this institution. http://newsciencejournalism.com/11/2009/the-ongoing-somalia-conflict-caused-a-lot-of-mental-illness/
A very good case study:
- The motive behind all these attacks from radio kulmiye director Mr. Osman Abdullahi Gure who is also one of the Somalia minister of information advisers and Mr. Abdirahman Yusuf Sheikh Adalla who is working radio Mogadishu and SNTV is making intimidation and harassments in order to push Mr. Daud to agree the way they prepared the draft media law as they doing a double faced organized crimes and corruption against the government and doing a public misinformation through media propaganda among the government and the independent journalists and media houses.
- The second motive is Mr. Daud’s disagreement over the draft media law process in which he was described “The Criminal Defamation Law” because these two gentlemen are members of the planned group by this unfairness law.
- There is a business competition among Somalia independent media outlets and these two radio kulmiye owners are doing a malicious campaign against Shabelle radio and their argument is extensively known by the entire society.
Furthermore, there is no any freedom of press, rights to establish independent association and freedom of expression in Somalia if this draft media law endorsed by the parliament according to article 28 which indicates the preservation of the law and it says, media related violations will be jointly handled by the Ministry of information, the attorney general, the National Media Council and the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ).
No matter if NUSOJ is presenting the entire journalists association such like this stage at courts but the question is which NUSOJ? The one independent and led by Omar Faruk Osman as SOMESHA officially recognized it or the other one led by Mohamed Ibrahim in which looks like a governmental one-sided body.
According to the ground press freedom situations, Mr. Daud Abdi Daud of SOMESHA decided and planning to meet the Secretary General of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) Mr. Omar Faruk Osman in order to address the current state of press freedom in the nation and bring together the attention to the international community and local authorities, the emergence and existence of the press freedom violations carried by a group of governmental journalists, media owners and non-media professionals who have a hidden agenda and a close ties to the ministry of information.
“This group is very dangerous with a lot of worry, and you can’t realize the way they were collaborated as they are doing a cover up money collected works to help wounded journalists in Mogadishu hospitals without accuracy and accountability. They don’t even count the aggressive actions they have made by the independent journalists. “Said Mr. Daud Abdi Daud of SOMESHA
The two journalist’s leaders who are well respected nationally, regionally and globally will essentially discuss Somali journalists and media practitioners away forward as Mr. Daud believes that in due course, Somali journalists will come together and shape their unity to ensure their independence and future goodwill as well.
“We call to release unconditionally radio shabelle and sky fm immediately on the coming court hearing as we will be present to do monitoring and evaluation during the next court hearing on January 5, 2015.” Mr. Daud added
Finally, SOMESHA is amazing! It is working save endangered nature, protect essential habitats and address media people threats as the year draws to a close. SOMESHA calls national and international probe for how the patients at Habeb hospital fairly cured as well as all our finding allegations against radio kulmiye and its two owners as mentioned above in this report and can be independently verified and hopefully Mr. Daud is ready to answer any feedback questions and you can be reached Mr. Daud on +252616349997 or Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
